Anna D. Rinehart, SCS , author Medical Aesthetics, Fundamentals and Practice 1994,1996, 2006, 2008 Medical Aesthetics Treatments, Procedures, Protocols Physicians Clinical Skin Care Guide 2008 Contrary to many physicians utilizing the skills of an advanced nurse-aesthetician, a medical aesthetician was never created just to work in plastic surgery offices. A medical aesthetician performs sophisticated clinically sound skin care procedures that does not require them to be a nurse or respond to "physicians orders" as a nursing license requires their licensees. A medical aesthetician is a nurse, or an aesthetician or a combined licensed skin care specialist with an acquired education in aesthetics and one that has obtained medical aesthetics continuing education certifications. A medical aesthetician has obtained a broad diversified aesthetic background with solid pre-emptive skin care practices to maintain healthy skin that does not mimic a physicians dermatology practice. In fact the medical aesthetician performs procedures that grew from the void in patient care that medical dermatologists felt were "not medicine" but aesthetic. It was the emerging differences of skills that has help identify what a medical aesthetician is/is not. Physicians from every medical specialty background seeking to practice aesthetic medicine should look to the incredible combined knowledge and skills of a nurse-aesthetician/ medical aesthetician. All physicians seeking to develop clinical skin care health centers/medical spa or other combined medical aesthetic practices should recognize the great asset a properly trained aesthetician can be to their practice. Aesthetician A general aesthetician performs many wonderful aesthetic facial treatments to cleanse, pamper, soften, and beautify the outward tissue of the skin. They are “all hands-on” facial cosmetic professionals. The majority of aestheticians never obtain higher advanced medical aesthetic training. They do not have a diversified medical and aesthetic background. Good examples of extremely successful aestheticians are Diane Young, Adrian Arpelle, and Christina Carlino…. These aestheticians went on and designed skin care products alongside of great theories of “how to care for the skin” cosmetically.
Medical Aesthetician Most medical aestheticians have 2-4 years of college background. They are licensed as an aesthetician and have a nursing background (LPN, RN), obtained specialized training in medical aesthetic concepts and have gained clinical insights for caring the skin on a more solid science based format. Medical Aestheticians have garnered great clinical skin care experience and equally acquired the science behind the beauty. They are focused on the beauty of pre-emptive skin care treatments. Medical aestheticians are a new breed of skin care specialists with great sense of aesthetics and a “how to maintain” healthy skin. Admirably they have had to bridge their business savvy, clinical knowledge and aesthetic background to create a specialty within the aesthetic industry. There are no degrees or licensures per se for medical aestheticians but I suspect it will become necessity to compete within this growing market. There are thousands of physicians, nurses and aestheticians utilizing the terminology ”medical aesthetician” but there are few that promote the script for the acceptance of medical aestheticians as well as the concepts to implement a solid framework for the practice of medical aesthetics. Few push for aestheticians to raise to a new level of practice….it is an ongoing process. I personally believe aestheticians should utilize the terminology as a "licensed skin care specialist" only if their particular state issues these licensures to avoid litigations . Many states do not provide a license in the aesthetic field. It would be more appropriate for the aesthetician to use the terminology “Medical Aesthetics Specialty” as a licensed skin care specialist rather than advertising that they are a medical aesthetician. While it may be somewhat an inference of the title by the practice of medical aesthetics….it could legitimately be a problem in the future. I personally prefer to be regarded as a skin care specialist working in the specialty of medical aesthetics than being regarded as a medical aesthetician. I prefer to be in a structured clinical skin care program. I think many times a good argument for aestheticians using the term “medical aesthetician” to describe what they do are not as necessary as it is for them to describe what the foundation of their specialty is. Dermatologists that moved from simply performing “mainstream dermatology practice” to cosmetic dermatology did so as a necessity to survive, thrive and develop their skills. They formed the concept of “cosmetic dermatology” and practiced “cosmetic dermatology” years before they became accepted as legitimate cosmetic dermatologists. Everyone struggles for identity; the licensed skin care specialist practicing medical aesthetics is a medical aesthetician. But, it will take more time for the rising specialist to obtain a legally accepted title of medical aesthetician. Finally, I think the change in the health care industry and the influx of rising entrepreneurial physicians will facilitate the acceptance of medical aestheticians as well as promote higher standards of education. It is not the obtainment of a degree that is as important for the rising aesthetician as it is the degree of competency intertwined with “Hands-On” combined with compassion provided patients in clinical skin care programs. Cidesco Diplomat Nurse-Aesthetician ( LPN, RN, NP ) This individual may be a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or nurse practitioner graduate. The Cidesco Diplomat nurse aesthetician graduated and has practiced in some capacity as a licensed nurse; has graduated from a aesthetic program; has obtained international certification as a Cidesco Diplomat. The Cidesco Nurse-Aesthetician is a tremendous asset for the physicians practice and brings tremendous skill, treatments and protocols that are not mainstream practice to either the nursing background or aesthetic profession. Cidesco Facial Aesthetics Instructor This individual has graduated as an aesthetician, graduated form a facial aesthetics instructor program has graduated from a Cidesco Diplomat international exam. This individual is a tremendous asset to any physicians medical aesthetics spa. When a nurse ( LPN/RN) places names/initials behind their name to promote their program it becomes necessary to use initials that have been recognized by some organization or body of board examiners. Unfortunately the aesthetician whom is recognized as a skin care specialist does not have a body of certification that addresses their specialized knowledge and skills for the official initials of SCS. It is my personal dream to see that the aesthetician has the initials LSCS ( Licensed Skin Care Specialist ) after their name when they have graduated and been tested for their aesthetic license. |
