In 1987 Anna D. Rinehart and Dr. Plez Tinsley presented the first Medical Aesthetics Concept in the State of Mississippi for Cosmetologists Instructors and Aestheticians. This program was a very basic core concept to help the Cosmetology Instructors and Facial Aesthetic Instructors to recognize a new arena as the future unfolded. Dr. Paul Plez Tinsly Jr., New York, MD, a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon helped to solidify this comprehensive teaching program for the State of Mississippi. In 1988 she repesented her ideas to Tulane University for the Acoustic Neuroma Association clarifying a legitimate role for the Medical Aesthetician.
Dr. John J. Conley, MD, New York, Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon encouraged Ms. Rinehart to promote her concepts and ideas to address the void in mainstream medicine and in general nursing protocols. He shared her vision for the integration of Medical Aesthetics as a speciality that would eventually lead to state license for anyone performing this level of clinical skin care management.
Opening Doors
Anna D. Rinehart wanted to "open doors" for licensed skin care specialists (aestheticians) desiring to work with varied medical specialists (MD, DO, DDS). She envisioned an upward mobility and financial security through providing advanced clinical skin care procedures that are not available within the standard aesthetics education. She envisioned a move from general nursing standard protocols to a broader scope of practice that included a nurse-aesthetician certification. She envisioned a place where the LPN could integrate her nursing background to include a specialty license (750 -1200 hours) in Medical Aesthetics. Historicaly, the LPN's career progression was limited to becoming an RN in order to advance competively in the health care system and to be respected for their speciality education. She envisioned the RN to elevate their mobility through the health care system with a specialized license in Medical Aesthetics (750-1200 hours) so , if he/she no longer wanted directly with "patient" then, she would have broader options with a Medical Aesthetics Speciality license and still utilize her/his nursing process background.
Anna D. Rinehart has been recognized as the first nurse-aesthetician in the United States that implemented a Medical Aesthetics Teaching Program to positively benefit the continuity patient care at Scott and White Hospital through the Division of Plastic Surgery, under the the auspices of Board Certifed Plastic Surgeons; Dr. Charles N. Verheyden, PhD, MD, Dr. Dennis Lynch, MD, Dr. Peter Grothaus, MD, and Dr. Raleigh White, MD.
Anna D. Rinehart, implemented the first Medical Aesthetics CEU program for Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas for Physicians, Nurses and Aestheticians. Doctors began recognizing the value in implementing Comprehensive Non-invasive Facial Aesthetics Program . In the mid 90s Physicians began to make the shift from their general practice of medicine to integrating a Medical Aesthetics Program to promote a skin health and wellness format. Nurses and Aestheticians began to recognize their was a need for specialized Facial Aesthetics and Medical Aesthetics training to prepare to work with the physicians expanding their medical practice to include Noninvasive Cosmetic Aesthetics ( NICA ).The first book "Fundamentals and Practice for Medical Aesthetics" was written and used to continue teaching doctors, nurses and aeshteticians. Ms. Rinehart sold the copyrights to a group of Plastic Surgeons and Nurse-Aestheticians in Taiwan, Taipei. Emma Chang, translated that book to become a major part of their Chinese teaching program for physicians, nurses and aestheticians in Beijing, China, and Taipei, Taiwan. From this point , Ms. Anna D. Rinehart continued to develop Medical Aesthetics Books to be used directly with the very competive teaching programs she had developed.
